The Violin Apprentice That Wouldn’t

Once a budding violinist and composer, Scherzini grew jealous of the young practicing Apprentices around him. He just couldn’t play or compose as well as the others.

Oh, not because he wasn’t able to, per se. He had both time and opportunity. No. The reason was plain. You see, he was simply unwilling to dedicate himself to the Musical Quest.

 

His envy consumed him.

 

 

When Music Turned to Mischief

First, He began subtly borrowing themes from students, colleagues, and rivals. Before long, he found a yet to be premiered manuscript.

With a glance, he could see it was a great Legend. Since no one had yet heard this masterpiece, he schemed to steal the music and leave a lesser piece in its place.

 

He knew it would be his word against the true composer’s. An easy obstacle to overcome. Scherzini could be very persuasive, and he felt sure he could convince others the work was truly his. It was almost too easy.

 

The Curse Awakened

But Scherzini didn’t realize that the scheming, sneaking, and stealing had set in motion an ancient curse. 

One that was already growing and moving inside him.

 

A Voice Forever Tangled

Immediately, as he replaced the Legend with his own splotchy mess of a manuscript, the curse began to manifest.

First his skin transformed – as if parts turned to smudged ink. His fingers grew and bent.

His tongue tangled – never to sing melodies again.

 

And his once underdeveloped musical power – shriveled into a rather prune-ish bit of brown gunk.

 

 

Beware the Goblin’s Footsteps

It was a heavy price to pay. Now, unable to compose or play, he lies in wait to take the musical scraps and motives that cannot be his, pilfer the motivation and inspiration of other aspiring Apprentices –

 

and thwart their practice at every turn.

 

Warning to all Musical Apprentices

Now, Scherzini has forgotten all the joy he would have while playing music. He is left with nothing but envy in his heart. 

All Questing Apprentices would do well to be on their guard. For Scherzini is a Goblin with great skill and power to disrupt the progress and skill of any unsuspecting practicer.

 

What he lacked in musical determination, he applied thoroughly to his mischief.
